Caller Unknown

At 3:14 every night, a crisis volunteer takes a call only she can hear: a man, edging along the bridge where her brother died.

Nell Baek answers phones overnight at a crisis line on the third floor of an old building above a river gorge in Corwen, Pennsylvania. At 3:14 one November night, line 4 lights with a man walking out along the Merriman High Bridge, where her brother died twelve years ago, and he calls her by a name only her brother ever used. Each night he is a few lamps further along, nobody else can hear him, and he is counting toward lamp seventeen.

What is in the supervisor's drawer?

She opens it an inch on something black and clothbound and shuts it again. What does she know about line 4 that she will not say?

Where is the call coming from?

Danny hears only hiss on the same line, and the police find an empty walkway at lamp eleven.
